Right then. No red underwear

Colour and Wimbledon don’t go well together. Can’t really understand why. It has baffled me for long as to why Wimbledon will not allow players to wear coloured clothing. And I am not referring to the hideous things Andre Agassi would wear in his heyday… but some subtle colour that allows the player to express, emote and perhaps make a point with should be allowed, no?

Tatiana Golovin at Wimbledon

The reason for this post is of course the outfit (or rather, innerwear) colour of Tatiana Golovin of France. According to Rediff.com:

Tatiana Golovin had the Wimbledon referee reaching for his rule book when she sought to appear on court wearing red underwear.

Hm. Now first, I am not too keen on players showing off their underwear. But in the case of the outfit by Ms Golovin, it’s more like shorts than underwear and hence may have qualified as outerwear rather than innerwear. Quite a waste of time and effort. Interestingly, no one seemed to care if this colour attack affected and distracted the opponent… [Report 1, 2]

Tatiana GolovinMs Golovin, though, had her reasons for wearing this:

There’s like a little red outline, and they say red is the color that proves that you’re strong and you’re confident, so I’m happy with my red knickers.

Do read the interview linked to. The interviewer is quite impressed with the knickers and would like a pair himself/herself!

Here is an interesting article on the Beeb about dressing up/down at Wimbledon!
